Wat is het verschil tussen i-Size en R44/04? Veiligheidsnormen voor autostoeltjes uitgelegd

Als je op zoek bent naar een nieuw autostoeltje, dan kom je ongetwijfeld de termen i-Size en R44/04 tegen. Maar wat betekenen deze veiligheidsnormen eigenlijk? En wat is het verschil tussen de twee? In deze blog leggen we het je haarfijn uit, zodat jij een veilige en bewuste keuze kunt maken voor je kindje.

Wat is R44/04?

De ECE R44/04 is een oudere Europese veiligheidsnorm voor autostoeltjes, ingevoerd in 2005. Deze norm deelt autostoeltjes in op basis van het gewicht van het kind:

  • Groep 0: 0-10 kg
  • Groep 0+: 0-13 kg
  • Groep 1: 9-18 kg
  • Groep 2: 15-25 kg
  • Groep 3: 22-36 kg

Autostoelen met deze norm zijn getest op frontale botsingen, maar niet verplicht op zijdelingse botsingen. De norm focust dus vooral op de bescherming bij frontale aanrijdingen.

Wat is i-Size?

i-Size (voluit: UN R129) is de modernere opvolger van de R44/04-norm. Deze norm werd in 2013 ingevoerd om de veiligheid van kinderen in auto’s verder te verbeteren. i-Size kijkt niet naar gewicht, maar naar de lengte van het kind. Daarnaast stelt i-Size strengere eisen aan autostoeltjes:

  • Verplichte zijwaartse crashtest
  • Bevestiging via Isofix (voor een kleinere kans op verkeerde installatie)
  • Verplicht achterwaarts reizen tot 15 maanden
  • Gebruik op basis van lichaamslengte i.p.v. gewicht

Waarom wordt R44/04 uitgefaseerd?

Sinds september 2023 mogen er geen nieuwe R44/04-autostoeltjes meer geproduceerd worden. De bestaande stoeltjes mogen nog wel verkocht en gebruikt worden, maar de EU stapt langzaam volledig over op i-Size. Deze overstap is bedoeld om kinderveiligheid in het verkeer nog verder te verbeteren.

Moet ik overstappen naar i-Size?

Heb je nog een goedgekeurd R44/04-stoeltje? Dan mag je die blijven gebruiken zolang het stoeltje in goede staat is en past bij de lengte en het gewicht van je kind. Maar ben je toe aan een nieuwe stoel, dan is het verstandig te kiezen voor een i-Size model. Deze stoelen voldoen aan de nieuwste veiligheidseisen en bieden doorgaans betere bescherming bij ongelukken.
